Jaipur: The Rajasthan government has announced that women will receive 33 percent reservation in the upcoming urban local body (Nikay) elections, instead of the previously proposed 50 percent. Officials said the enhanced quota could not be implemented because of legal and procedural complications linked to a court decision affecting the reservation framework.
The decision means that municipal corporations, municipalities, and municipal councils will continue with the existing one-third reservation for women in the forthcoming elections. However, the government has reaffirmed that 50 percent reservation for women will be implemented in the next Panchayati Raj elections, where the legal framework allows for the expanded quota.
The move has generated political discussion, with supporters describing it as a temporary legal necessity while opposition leaders have questioned the delay in extending greater representation to women in urban local bodies. Election authorities are expected to finalize ward reservations and the election schedule in accordance with the existing legal provisions.
Women's participation in local governance has expanded significantly across India over the past three decades. Several states have already adopted 50 percent reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions, leading to greater representation of women in village-level decision-making. Rajasthan has also committed to strengthening women's role in grassroots democracy through future rural local body elections.
