Mumbai: India’s stock markets came under renewed selling pressure on Monday, with benchmark indices reversing their early gains as investors remained cautious amid domestic and global economic uncertainties.
The BSE Sensex fell more than 500 points, slipping below the 71,900 level during morning trading, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined by around 150 points to trade below 22,400. The reversal followed a positive opening, indicating that investors were reluctant to sustain buying at higher levels.
Information technology and banking stocks were among the major contributors to the decline. Shares of several heavyweight companies came under pressure, with selling also visible in select fast-moving consumer goods and other large-cap stocks.
Market sentiment remained fragile amid concerns over persistent foreign institutional investor outflows, elevated international crude oil prices and rising US bond yields. Investors were also monitoring inflation-related developments and the implications of recent monetary policy measures.
The decline in benchmark indices, however, did not reflect weakness across every segment of the market. Some auto stocks and select mid-cap and small-cap shares showed resilience, highlighting a mixed trend beneath the headline indices.
Market volatility also increased, signalling heightened uncertainty among traders. Investors are expected to track upcoming inflation data, corporate earnings announcements, global market movements and further developments in crude oil prices for direction.
Analysts generally advise investors to distinguish between short-term market volatility and the long-term fundamentals of individual companies. Market participants are likely to remain cautious until greater clarity emerges on inflation, interest rates and foreign investment flows.
The latest fall serves as a reminder that stock market movements can change quickly in response to global economic developments and investor sentiment. Investors should assess their risk tolerance and investment horizon before making decisions during volatile trading sessions.
