New Delhi: Cabinet Secretary Dr. T. V. Somanathan will continue in office after the Union government approved a one-year extension of his tenure on August 5, 2026. His original two-year term was due to conclude at the end of August.
Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, took charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024, succeeding Rajiv Gauba. Before becoming Cabinet Secretary, he served in several important positions at the Centre, including Finance Secretary and Secretary in the Department of Expenditure.
The extension had been widely anticipated in bureaucratic circles for several weeks. Reports in July had suggested that no alternative candidate had emerged as a clear frontrunner and that Somanathan was likely to receive another year in the post.
His continuation is significant because the Cabinet Secretary coordinates the work of central ministries and plays a key role in inter-ministerial administration and implementation of major government decisions.
The extension also provides administrative continuity as the Union government moves ahead with its policy and governance agenda. The decision comes alongside a one-year extension for Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, according to reports.
Somanathan has recently focused on improving administrative efficiency, including urging senior officials to make government meetings shorter, more purposeful and outcome-oriented.
