NEW DELHI | DNN SPECIAL REPORT

The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused an urgent hearing for a petition seeking a CBI investigation into alleged activities associated with the viral social media movement known as the "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP). The petition also raised concerns regarding alleged fake law degrees and the commercial use of courtroom remarks.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant told the petitioner's counsel not to take the matter "so sentimentally" when concerns were raised about the impact of the movement on the judiciary's image. The Court observed that there was no extraordinary urgency requiring immediate intervention and indicated the matter would be dealt with in due course.

The petition reportedly seeks a probe into allegations involving fake advocates, fraudulent law degrees, and the online circulation of courtroom observations for publicity or commercial purposes.

The Cockroach Janta Party emerged recently as a satirical online movement and has attracted significant attention across social media platforms. The controversy traces back to remarks made during a Supreme Court hearing earlier this month, which subsequently became the subject of widespread online discussion and parody.

Legal observers say the Court's decision does not dispose of the petition but simply declines to prioritize it for urgent listing. The matter may still be heard at a later date according to the Court's regular schedule.
