Sensex Slides 500 Points as Banking, Realty Stocks Drag Markets Lower

Mumbai: Indian benchmark equity indices closed significantly lower on Monday as broad-based selling, led by private banking and real estate stocks, weighed heavily on investor sentiment. The BSE Sensex declined nearly 500 points to settle around 77,600, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped more than 120 points to close near 24,200.

The decline reflected cautious market positioning amid mixed global cues, foreign institutional investor activity, and profit booking following recent market gains. Selling pressure intensified during the afternoon session, dragging benchmark indices to their day's lows.

Private sector banking stocks emerged as the biggest laggards, with investors trimming positions in major lenders. Realty companies also witnessed sharp declines as concerns over valuation and sector-specific weakness resurfaced.

Despite weakness in the frontline indices, analysts noted that India's long-term economic outlook remains supported by robust domestic consumption, infrastructure spending, and resilient corporate earnings. However, near-term volatility is expected to persist due to global interest rate expectations, geopolitical developments, and fluctuations in foreign capital flows.

Market participants will now closely monitor upcoming quarterly earnings, macroeconomic indicators, inflation trends, and policy signals from major global central banks for further direction.
