Late Merino Magic Sends Spain Into World Cup Semi-Finals

Spain's World Cup dream remains alive thanks to another unforgettable contribution from Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, whose late goal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Belgium.

The match appeared destined for extra time after both teams battled fiercely throughout 90 minutes. However, Merino needed less than two minutes after coming on as a substitute to become Spain's hero once again.

Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who had replaced the injured Thibaut Courtois, failed to hold a powerful long-range effort from Pau Cubarsí. Merino reacted instantly, smashing the rebound into the roof of the net and sending Spanish supporters into celebration.

Spain had opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz fired home after Courtois saved Dani Olmo's initial effort. Belgium responded before halftime through Charles De Ketelaere, whose powerful header ended Spain's remarkable defensive streak at the tournament.

The second half saw Belgium threaten on several occasions, while Courtois produced key saves before suffering a suspected muscle injury that forced him off the field. His absence proved decisive as Spain capitalized on the late goalkeeping error.

Manager Luis de la Fuente now leads the European champions into a highly anticipated semi-final against France, with Spain standing just two victories away from lifting their second FIFA World Cup trophy.

For Belgium, the defeat marked another heartbreaking chapter for a generation of stars that once promised so much. Veterans including Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Meunier, Leandro Trossard, and Courtois may have played their final World Cup, ending an era without securing a major international title.
