Efforts to contain a deadly Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been severely disrupted after angry residents attacked health facilities and freed suspected patients from treatment centers, raising fears of a wider spread of the virus.

Authorities reported that residents in a town at the center of the outbreak stormed and partially burned an Ebola treatment facility where infected patients were receiving care. During the chaos, at least 18 individuals suspected of carrying the virus reportedly left the center, prompting an urgent public health response.

The incident occurred amid growing tensions between local communities and health officials enforcing strict disease-control measures.

Just days earlier, another treatment center in the town of Rwampara was set ablaze after relatives of a deceased man were prevented from retrieving his body. Health officials said the restrictions were necessary because Ebola victims remain highly contagious after death and traditional funeral practices can accelerate transmission.

Public health experts warn that handling infected bodies and gathering for funeral ceremonies are among the most dangerous sources of Ebola spread. Specialized burial teams have therefore been deployed to manage the remains of suspected victims under strict safety protocols.

In response to the escalating crisis, authorities in northeastern Congo have introduced emergency restrictions, including a ban on funeral wakes and limits on public gatherings exceeding 50 people.

Health workers continue to battle both the virus and widespread misinformation, fear, and mistrust among local communities. Aid organizations have warned that attacks on treatment centers could significantly undermine containment efforts and place more lives at risk.

The latest unrest highlights the challenges facing medical teams working in outbreak zones, where public cooperation is often critical to preventing the disease from spreading further.

Government officials and international health agencies have appealed for calm and urged residents to follow health guidelines as containment operations continue.
