Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, triggering a leadership contest within the Labour Party and opening a new chapter in British politics.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, a visibly emotional Starmer thanked his family, supporters, and colleagues. He stated that he accepted the decision of his party and would step aside as Labour leader while remaining Prime Minister during the transition period.
"I accept with good grace that my party no longer believes I am the right person to lead us into the next general election," Starmer told reporters.
The outgoing prime minister paid tribute to his wife, Victoria Starmer, and his children, saying he now hopes to focus on family life and "be the best dad I can."
Burnham Confirms Leadership Bid
Within minutes of the announcement, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed he would seek the Labour leadership and, if successful, become the next Prime Minister.
In a statement, Burnham praised Starmer's service to the country and pledged to provide stability during the transition.
"The country expects stability, seriousness and a continued focus on the issues that matter most, and that is what it will get," Burnham said.
He highlighted economic growth, the cost of living, housing, public services, and opportunities for younger generations as priorities for the next phase of Labour government.
Early Support Emerges
Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting became one of the first senior Labour figures to publicly endorse Burnham's leadership campaign.
Streeting, who left government following disappointing election results earlier this year, said he had lost confidence in Starmer's leadership and believes Burnham is best placed to unite the party and rebuild public support.
Political analysts expect additional candidates to enter the contest in the coming days, potentially setting up a highly competitive race for Labour's top job.
What Happens Next?
Starmer confirmed he will remain Prime Minister until Labour selects a new leader. Party officials have indicated the process could be completed before Parliament returns in September, although a consensus candidate could accelerate the timetable.
The leadership election is expected to focus heavily on Labour's electoral strategy, economic policy, and its vision for the next general election.
For now, Britain enters a period of political transition as one Labour leader departs and the battle to choose his successor begins.
