SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — May 24, 2026
A 39-year-old man has died following a shark attack while fishing on the Great Barrier Reef in far north Queensland, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef approximately 50 kilometers offshore between the cities of Cairns and Townsville. The area is renowned for recreational fishing, boating, and diving activities.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before noon after reports that a shark had attacked a fisherman in the water. Rescue teams transported the critically injured man to the Hull River Heads boat ramp near the town of Tully, where medical personnel attempted emergency treatment.
Despite efforts to save him, the victim succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching shore.
Queensland Police stated that a report will be prepared for the coroner following what they described as a sudden and non-suspicious death in the Cassowary Coast region.
Authorities have not yet identified the species of shark involved in the fatal encounter. Marine experts note that bull sharks and tiger sharks are commonly found throughout the Great Barrier Reef, while great white sharks occasionally enter the region's waters.
The tragedy marks another fatal shark attack in Australian waters following a deadly incident near Rottnest Island, Western Australia, just one week earlier.
Local officials emphasized that while shark attacks remain rare, the vast reef system is home to numerous shark species and visitors should continue following marine safety guidelines.
The incident has renewed discussions about safety measures for recreational fishers and divers operating in remote offshore waters.
As investigations continue, the victim's family is being supported by emergency services and local authorities.
