WASHINGTON/QUETTA, MAY 24, 2026
A devastating explosion ripped through a train traveling near Quetta in Pakistan's troubled Balochistan province on Sunday, leaving at least 24 people dead and scores injured in one of the deadliest attacks in the region this year. According to initial reports, the blast occurred close to a railway track and was powerful enough to derail train coaches and damage nearby vehicles and structures.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene as thick smoke billowed over the area. Hospitals in Quetta declared emergency measures to accommodate the large number of casualties arriving from the blast site. Witnesses described scenes of panic as rescue teams searched through damaged train compartments for survivors. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant organization active in the province, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it targeted security personnel traveling on the train. Pakistani authorities strongly condemned the incident and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the attack as a tragic act of terrorism that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and left many others seriously injured. Security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation into the bombing.
The latest violence underscores continuing instability in Balochistan, where separatist insurgent groups have repeatedly targeted infrastructure, transportation networks, and security forces. Analysts warn that the attack represents another escalation in the long-running conflict affecting Pakistan's largest province.
