JODHPUR, Rajasthan — June 23, 2026:
Medical authorities in Rajasthan remain on high alert following a troubling incident at Paota District Hospital, where eight women experienced severe health complications after undergoing cesarean section surgeries on June 20.
A five-member expert committee from AIIMS Jodhpur visited the hospital on Tuesday to conduct a detailed inspection. The team examined the operation theatre, surgical procedures, medical equipment, medicines used during the surgeries, and interviewed both patients and their families to reconstruct the sequence of events.
According to officials, preliminary laboratory tests have not detected any major infection linked to the operation theatre or surgical instruments. Samples collected from blood cultures, urine, vaginal swabs, and operating room equipment were analyzed, and early findings showed no significant bacterial contamination. However, doctors emphasized that these are only initial results and that a final 96-hour report is still pending.
Drug Quality Under Scrutiny
Investigators are also examining whether medications administered during treatment could have contributed to the complications. Samples of the drugs used during the procedures have been sent to a government drug-testing laboratory in Jaipur for quality assessment.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have suspended the use of all batches of Sodium Lactate Injection supplied by Albert David Company, commonly administered as Ringer's Lactate (RL) fluid, until further testing is completed.
Two Women Remain Critical
Two patients, identified as Lalita and Sonu, continue to receive intensive treatment at AIIMS Jodhpur. Lalita remains on ventilator support, while both women are under continuous observation by specialist medical teams.
Meanwhile, six other affected women — Tasleem, Gatt Kanwar, Nandu Kanwar, Payal, Santosh, and Priyanka — have shown significant improvement. Doctors reported that their vital parameters are stable, although they will remain under observation for the next several days as a precaution.
Government Monitoring Response
Senior administrative officials have been closely monitoring the situation. Additional District Collector Daulatram Choudhary inspected Paota District Hospital, while Additional District Collector Anjum Tahir Samma reviewed patient care arrangements at AIIMS Jodhpur.
Earlier, Principal Secretary for Medical and Health Services Gayatri Rathore met with the affected women and their families. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also visited both hospitals to receive updates from doctors and assess the condition of the patients.
Awaiting Final Answers
While initial findings have ruled out obvious contamination within the operating theatre, investigators caution that it is too early to determine the exact cause of the complications. The final laboratory and drug-analysis reports, expected within days, are likely to play a crucial role in identifying whether the incident resulted from medication issues, infection, procedural factors, or another underlying cause.
Health authorities have assured the public that patient safety remains the highest priority and that a comprehensive inquiry is underway
