BENGALURU: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday defended the government's position amid criticism over the absence of women ministers in the state cabinet, asserting that the discussion extends beyond any single individual and must be viewed in the context of multiple vacant positions.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said there are several vacancies that require consideration and that decisions regarding cabinet appointments would be made collectively after due consultation with party leadership and stakeholders.

"There are a lot of vacancies. It is not about any one person," the chief minister remarked, addressing concerns raised by political observers and women's groups regarding representation in the government.

The issue has gained attention in recent weeks as calls for greater gender representation in Karnataka's cabinet continue to grow. Opposition leaders and social organizations have urged the government to ensure adequate participation of women in key decision-making positions.

Shivakumar also highlighted the government's ongoing welfare initiatives and development schemes, indicating that governance priorities remain focused on delivering benefits to citizens while organizational matters are being addressed internally.

Political analysts note that cabinet expansion and representation remain sensitive issues within the state's political landscape, with expectations that future appointments may seek to balance regional, social, and gender considerations.

Further announcements regarding cabinet vacancies are expected following consultations between state leaders and the party's central leadership.
