In a significant ruling with nationwide political implications, The Supreme Court of India has affirmed the authority of the Election Commission of India to carry out the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The bench observed that the revision exercise is intended to maintain the purity of electoral rolls and strengthen democratic processes in india According to the court, the EC acted within its constitutional and statutory powers while conducting the verification drive in states including Bihar and West Bengal.
The court emphasized that ensuring accurate voter lists is essential for conducting “free and fair elections,” adding that the exercise cannot be termed arbitrary merely because it differs from previous revision methods.Petitions challenging the SIR process had argued that the revision could potentially exclude eligible voters and create administrative difficulties. However, the apex court ruled that the Election Commission possesses broad powers under Article 324 of the Constitution to supervise and manage elections.
Legal experts say the judgment is likely to reinforce the EC’s position ahead of future state and national elections, especially amid increasing debates over voter list accuracy and electoral transparency.
