The Rajasthan government has taken a major administrative step toward implementing the Yamuna Water Project by approving five new project offices and creating 46 technical positions. The move is intended to speed up planning, land acquisition, engineering work, and overall execution of the ambitious water supply scheme.
Three of the newly sanctioned offices will be located in Sikar and will oversee project activities for Jhunjhunu, Sikar, and Churu districts. Two additional executive engineer offices will be established in Kurukshetra, Haryana, to support coordination related to the project.
Officials believe the expanded administrative network will help streamline approvals, project monitoring, tendering, environmental clearances, and construction activities.
Relief for Millions
Once completed, the project is expected to provide long-term drinking water security to nearly 2.4 million people in Jhunjhunu district alone. The region has struggled for decades with declining groundwater levels and high fluoride content in drinking water.
Reliable surface water from the Yamuna is also expected to improve water availability for livestock while supporting irrigation, crop diversification, and higher agricultural productivity.
Construction Targeted for Late 2026
State Water Resources Minister Suresh Rawat has indicated that construction could begin between October and November 2026. The approval of new offices and technical staff is viewed as a significant milestone toward meeting that timeline.
The project is widely regarded as one of the most important infrastructure initiatives for the Shekhawati region, with the potential to transform water security and strengthen the local economy for future generations.
