BIKANER, Rajasthan | June 21, 2026

In a landmark announcement that could reshape the transportation and economic landscape of western Rajasthan, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled an ambitious railway development roadmap during a public event in Bikaner on Saturday. The minister flagged off the new Bikaner–Sabarmati Express and outlined plans aimed at extending rail connectivity to some of India's most remote border regions.

The proposed railway expansion focuses on strengthening connectivity in districts located along the India–Pakistan border, including Anupgarh, Khajuwala, Jaisalmer, and Barmer. According to the minister, the initiative will serve both civilian and strategic defense purposes while creating new opportunities for trade, tourism, agriculture, and employment.

STRATEGIC BORDER RAIL NETWORK

Presenting a detailed map of the proposed rail expansion, Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of extending railway infrastructure to frontier villages near the international border.

The minister stated that the project is designed not only to improve passenger mobility but also to strengthen national security. Enhanced rail access is expected to facilitate faster deployment of military personnel, Border Security Force units, and defense equipment during emergencies.

Officials believe the new corridors will also improve transportation of agricultural produce, support local industries, and boost tourism across the Thar Desert region.

MASTER PLAN FOR FOUR KEY BORDER REGIONS

The railway roadmap focuses on four strategically significant areas:

Anupgarh–Khajuwala Connectivity

New rail links proposed between the two border sub-divisions.

Direct integration with Bikaner Junction planned.

Jaisalmer–Barmer Expansion

Rail infrastructure to be extended deeper into remote desert regions.

Enhanced access for both civilian transportation and defense operations.

Local residents, business groups, and farmers have welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a long-awaited development for western Rajasthan.

POSSIBLE BIKANER–CHANDIGARH TRAIN SERVICE

During the event, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Bikaner MP Arjun Ram Meghwal urged the Railway Ministry to introduce a direct train between Bikaner and Chandigarh.

Responding to the request, Vaishnaw announced that railway officials have been instructed to conduct feasibility studies and prepare an operational plan for the proposed route.

The minister also credited Meghwal's efforts for helping bring the new Bikaner–Sabarmati Express service into operation.

₹76,000 CRORE RAILWAY INVESTMENT UNDERWAY

Highlighting the scale of ongoing infrastructure work, Vaishnaw stated that railway projects worth more than ₹76,000 crore are currently under implementation across Rajasthan.

Major projects include:

Doubling of the Merta–Bikaner rail line.

Construction of the Nal–Palana railway bypass to reduce congestion in Bikaner city.

Track doubling between Ratangarh, Bikaner East, and Rewari.

According to the Railway Minister, completion of these projects could allow the introduction of 10–12 additional train services from Bikaner in the coming years.

POLITICAL EXCHANGE OVER DEVELOPMENT RECORD

During his address, Vaishnaw also responded to criticism from opposition parties regarding the government's development record.

Referring to the introduction of modern rail services, he questioned whether previous administrations had provided projects comparable to the Vande Bharat Express for the region, while highlighting the current government's focus on infrastructure expansion and modernization.

DEEPSTATE NETWORK ANALYSIS

If implemented as proposed, the border rail expansion could become one of the most significant infrastructure initiatives undertaken in western Rajasthan in recent decades. Beyond transportation benefits, the project carries substantial strategic value due to its proximity to India's western frontier. Improved connectivity may also encourage industrial investment, tourism growth, and employment generation in some of the state's most remote regions.
