Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh — Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched one of his strongest political attacks yet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, calling them “traitors” and accusing them of damaging India’s constitutional framework.

Speaking during an event in his parliamentary constituency Raebareli after unveiling a statue of Dalit icon Veera Pasi, Rahul Gandhi alleged that constitutional institutions were under continuous attack. He stated that leaders who disregard the Constitution should be considered traitors and said he would never apologise for his remarks against the RSS.

Rahul Gandhi also criticised the Union government’s handling of the economy amid tensions and conflict in West Asia. Warning that an “economic storm” could hit India within the next few months, he said rising fuel prices, unemployment, cancelled examinations and growing public frustration were signs of a deeper crisis.

The Congress leader took a swipe at Prime Minister Modi over the widely discussed “Melodi” social media moment involving Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Referring to a viral video showing Modi gifting Melody toffees to Meloni, Rahul remarked that while citizens were struggling with inflation and economic hardship, the Prime Minister was “busy handing out candies in Italy.”

He further alleged that fuel exports by certain industrial groups during the West Asia crisis should be stopped so that domestic needs could be prioritised. Rahul urged the government to focus on farmers, employment generation and essential supplies instead of public relations campaigns and social media reels.

The BJP has not yet officially responded to Rahul Gandhi’s latest remarks, which are expected to intensify political tensions ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
