New Delhi | DSNN India Bureau
India is witnessing an intense spell of summer heat as the annual Nautapa period officially begins. Meteorological data indicate that temperatures have surged across multiple states, particularly in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Odisha, where several locations recorded temperatures above 45°C.
The hottest location reported on Sunday was Brahmapuri in Maharashtra, where the mercury touched 47.2°C, making it one of the highest temperatures recorded in the country this season. Several districts across central India have also experienced severe heatwave conditions, causing authorities to issue public advisories.
A heat distribution map released on 24 May showed vast regions of northern and central India under deep red and maroon zones, indicating temperatures ranging between 42°C and 48°C. Cooler conditions remain confined mainly to Himalayan states and parts of the Northeast.
Health Authorities Issue Advisory
Medical experts have warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Citizens have been advised to:
Stay hydrated throughout the day.
Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
Use umbrellas, hats and other protective measures.
Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heatstroke appear.
Impact Across States
In cities across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, roads and marketplaces witnessed reduced daytime activity as residents sought shelter from the scorching sun. Schools and local administrations in some districts are reviewing measures to protect children and outdoor workers from the extreme weather.
Meteorologists expect heatwave conditions to continue for several days before a possible weather change toward the end of the month, with chances of localized thunderstorms and rainfall in some regions.
