New Delhi: In a significant development, the Delhi High Court ordered that Sonam Wangchuk's health be monitored every day while he continues his indefinite hunger strike in the national capital.
A bench led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya observed that every citizen's life is invaluable and emphasized that the government has a constitutional responsibility to protect the health and safety of individuals, including those engaged in peaceful protest.
Appearing for the Union Government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that government-appointed doctors would examine Wangchuk daily and immediately provide any medical intervention recommended by health experts.
Petition Sought Emergency Medical Intervention
The court was hearing a petition requesting urgent medical safeguards for Wangchuk. The plea sought hospitalization if necessary, administration of liquid nutrition, and medical intervention should his health deteriorate significantly.
The petitioner argued that any serious medical emergency involving Wangchuk would carry national and international significance.
Protest Linked to NEET-UG Controversy
According to the organizers, Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, with Thursday marking the 19th day of his fast.
The demonstration forms part of a larger protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. Protesters are demanding political accountability over the alleged NEET-UG examination paper leak and have called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Appeals to End Hunger Strike
Several opposition leaders, civil society members, journalists, artists, and social media personalities have appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast and pursue dialogue with the government.
Despite visible physical weakness, Wangchuk has stated that his medical reports remain stable. He has urged supporters to participate in the proposed "Parliament March" scheduled for July 20.
