The Government of Delhi has introduced 300 new electric buses into the city's public transport network, marking another step toward expanding sustainable urban mobility. The buses were officially flagged off during a public ceremony attended by senior government officials.
With the latest addition, Delhi's electric bus fleet has grown to 4,838 vehicles, while the total government-operated bus fleet now stands at 6,593 buses, making the capital one of India's largest operators of electric public transport.
Designed for Narrow Urban Routes
The newly inducted buses are 9-meter electric vehicles, specially designed to operate on narrow and congested roads where larger buses face operational challenges. Officials expect the smaller buses to improve access between residential neighborhoods, metro stations, and major bus terminals, strengthening last-mile connectivity for daily commuters.
Cleaner Transport, Lower Emissions
Authorities say expanding the electric fleet is part of a broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions and encourage greater use of public transportation over private vehicles. The initiative aligns with Delhi's efforts to improve air quality while modernizing its transit infrastructure.
Future Expansion Plans
According to government officials, Delhi aims to increase its electric bus fleet to 7,000 buses by the end of 2026, with the total number of buses—including CNG-operated vehicles—expected to reach 7,500. Looking further ahead, the government has outlined a plan to expand the public transport fleet to 14,000 buses by 2029.
Officials say the continued expansion is intended to provide safer, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable transportation for millions of commuters across the national capital.
