LUCKNOW: A devastating fire swept through a coaching and educational facility in Lucknow's Aliganj area on Sunday, killing at least 15 people and injuring several others in one of the city's deadliest educational building disasters in recent years.

The blaze reportedly began in a lower-floor air-conditioning unit before rapidly spreading through the multi-storey building, filling classrooms and offices with thick smoke. Panic erupted as students and staff scrambled to escape. Several students reportedly jumped from upper floors in a desperate attempt to save their lives.
Emergency responders, including multiple fire brigade units and ambulance teams, rushed to the scene after local residents noticed heavy smoke billowing from the building. Rescue operations continued for hours as firefighters searched room by room for trapped occupants.
According to medical officials at King George's Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre, 15 victims were brought to the hospital deceased, while several injured individuals were admitted for treatment. Some students suffered back injuries after jumping from the building during the evacuation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognizance of the incident and directed senior officials to oversee rescue and relief operations. He also instructed authorities to ensure proper medical care for all injured victims.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the scene and described the tragedy as deeply heartbreaking. Rescue teams continued searching the premises amid reports that additional occupants might have been trapped inside during the early stages of the fire.
Witnesses and employees working in the building alleged that complaints regarding a malfunctioning air-conditioning system had previously been raised but were not adequately addressed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether negligence contributed to the disaster.
The building reportedly housed a library and coaching facility, along with creative and animation-related offices on the upper floors. Several staff members were among those injured in the incident.
As Lucknow mourns the loss of young lives, questions are being raised about fire safety compliance, emergency exits, and inspection standards in educational and commercial buildings across the city.
