BJP Set to Strengthen Grip on Delhi MCD as 16 IVP Councillors Join Party

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to significantly strengthen its position in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as all 16 councillors of the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP) formally merge with the party. The move is expected to reshape the balance of power ahead of the 2027 election.

In a major political development in Delhi, all 16 councillors of the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP)—a group formed by former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members—are set to officially join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The merger ceremony will take place at the Delhi BJP headquarters in the presence of Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The political realignment is expected to enhance BJP's numerical strength in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) while giving the party a stronger organizational base before next year's civic elections.

Political Strategy Behind the Merger

Political observers view the merger as a strategic move for both sides. With MCD elections approaching, BJP is consolidating its position across the capital, while IVP councillors are seeking greater political stability and improved prospects for future election tickets under a major political party.

The merger is also likely to influence the composition of ward committees and other municipal bodies, increasing BJP's influence in civic governance.

Leadership Roles Expected

Sources indicate that several former IVP leaders may receive key positions within the MCD structure. Reports suggest appointments to ward committee chairperson and deputy chairperson posts, as well as representation in zonal and standing committees.

IVP leader Mukesh Goyal is reportedly being considered for the chairmanship of an ad hoc or special committee, while co-leader Hemchand Goyal may be nominated to the Standing Committee from the Central Zone. Nominated councillor Manoj Jain is also expected to receive an important municipal responsibility.

Background

The Indraprastha Vikas Party was established after 16 AAP councillors resigned following the party's defeat in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Their departure weakened AAP's influence in the MCD, particularly in ward committees and the Standing Committee.

With the IVP now merging into BJP, the party is expected to gain stronger representation across multiple municipal zones, including Narela, Rohini, Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, West Zone, Central Zone, South Zone, Shahdara South, and City SP Zone.
