The release of canal water from Panchana Dam marked the first major irrigation flow into the command area in nearly two decades. Expectations were high among farmers preparing for the kharif sowing season.
However, officials reported that a technical failure caused one of the dam's control gates to close unexpectedly approximately 30 minutes after water release, cutting off the flow before it reached Kunsay village and other downstream agricultural areas.
Frustrated farmers erected barricades on the Gangapur City–Hindaun Mega Highway, bringing traffic to a standstill. Protesters declared they would continue the blockade until water reached their fields, accusing authorities of repeated promises without lasting solutions.
A ceremonial water blessing event scheduled in Kunsay village was also disrupted. Several state ministers were expected to attend the inauguration, but the gathering could not proceed as the protest intensified before their arrival.
Senior district officials attempted negotiations with demonstrators while police diverted vehicles to alternate routes.
According to the Water Resources Department, two upstream gates and one downstream gate had been opened to release water. The downstream gate reportedly malfunctioned and unexpectedly dropped shut, stopping the canal flow. Emergency repair efforts are underway, with specialized rescue personnel and divers deployed to assist technical teams.
